Shanghai lanterns unveiled "2024 Taipei Lantern Festival"

Xinhua News Agency, Taipei, 17 Feb (Reporter Chen Jianxing) on the occasion of the Spring Festival of the year of the Dragon, the colorful lantern "VISIT SHANGHAI" jointly produced by the Shanghai Taiwan Affairs Office and the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism was unveiled on the 17th on the "2024 Taipei Lantern Festival" officially launched on the same day to send New year's greetings to Taiwan compatriots.

This is the ninth consecutive year since 2016 that Shanghai has participated in the Taipei Lantern Festival by sending lights in response.

The theme of the Shanghai lanterns on display in Taiwan is "VISIT SHANGHAI". The whole is a circular steel structure, decorated with LED neon strips and more than 200 small lanterns. The rotating central lantern shows the Shanghai style of "buildings can be read, streets are suitable for walking, and the city is warm", flanked by "blooming magnolia" lanterns. A small lantern presents lantern riddles, poems, calligraphy and painting works, etc. At the welcome stand the cartoon dolls of Longbao "Haihai" and "Beibei" specially designed for the lantern.

On the evening of the 17th, many people came to watch the Shanghai lanterns. A young couple took their two children to "punch in" in the light area to take a picture. They pointed to the picture on the central lantern and "identified" the place they had been to: "that's the Expo Pavilion, that's the Yuyuan Garden, that's the Oriental Pearl Tower, and the Wukang building......"

It is understood that among the more than 200 small lanterns, in addition to the lantern riddle lanterns that provide on-site interaction, there are also 20 specially customized hand-painted lanterns. In 2023, the "Mountain and River Beauty · Cross-Strait Youth Poetry Exchange Conference" hosted by Shanghai Education Television received nearly 3000 submissions. The content of this custom-made hand-painted lantern comes from the excellent poetry, calligraphy and painting works created by young people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

It is reported that this year's Taipei Lantern Festival will last until March 3.
